Reading the Hugos Book Club (OPEN TO THE PUBLIC)

A book club in which we read current and potential Hugo Award nominees.

The Hugos are one of the most prestigious awards for Science Fiction and Fantasy media, and one of only a few major awards that are actually voted on by readers! Let's get together to discuss current and potential future Hugo Award nominees and decide whether we would vote for them or not.

The book selection for August is Greenteeth by Molly O'Neill.

Beneath the still surface of a lake lurks a monster with needle sharp teeth. Hungry and ready to pounce. Jenny Greenteeth has never spoken to a human before, but when a witch is thrown into her lake, something makes Jenny decide she's worth saving. Temperance doesn't know why her village has suddenly turned against her, only that it has something to do with the malevolent new pastor. Though they have nothing in common, these two must band together on a magical quest to defeat the evil that threatens Jenny's lake and Temperance's family, as well as the very soul of Britain.

For teen and up readers. Books can be checked out at any NLRPLS library location or online on the Libby app. We meet at Pocket Dimension Bookshoppe in North Little Rock. Parking is available along Main Street or in a lot next to the shop along 9th Street. There are also other parking lots close by, including one at the bus stop on the corner. Food is available to order in from Caverns & Forests next door. Feel free to plan to eat dinner there or just come for the discussion! For more information, contact Megan at mhines@nlrlibrary.org. No registration required.

📆 August 28th, 7-9pm

Ren Faire Season is about to kick off! So we’re celebrating with our own Mini-Faire right here in our Pocket Dimension!

Are you looking to start an adventuring party? Or perhaps meet the paramour of your dreams? If so this event is for folks like you! You’ll be able to meet fellow book-lovers seeking romance and/or friendship. This event is open to any sexuality~ so come say “Haayyy nonny nonny”!

Check in at the front desk to get a name tag and one of our “Flirtation Cards”. These are cheeky cards that you can give it to the paramour of your choice— they can then choose to respond to you at a later date or not.

Only looking to add to your platonic adventuring party? Fear not! We’ll have Bracelets of Friendship you can adorn to indicate to fellow adventurers that you seek only camaraderie.

The first 60 minutes or so will be more structured to help facilitate communication, but afterwards folks will be left to themselves to chat with any folks they want. This is intended to be a casual event, so feel free to come and go as you please.

Costumes are strongly encouraged, but not required! Please know that we may (lovingly) tease you if you come without any whimsy.

The book selection for July is The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow.

Sir Una Everlasting was Dominion’s greatest hero: the orphaned girl who became a knight, who died for queen and country. Her legend lives on in songs and stories, in children’s books and recruiting posters―but her life as it truly happened has been forgotten. Centuries later, Owen Mallory―failed soldier, struggling scholar―falls in love with the tale of Una Everlasting. Her story takes him to war, to the archives―and then into the past itself. Una and Owen are tangled together in time, bound to retell the same story over and over again, no matter what it costs. But that story always ends the same way. If they want to rewrite Una’s legend―if they want to tell a different story--they’ll have to rewrite history itself.
